Have you ever wondered what functional medicine is and how it can benefit your health? Learn about Buddy Touchinsky‘s personal health journey:
Well, I recently had an enlightening conversation with a functional medicine-leaning interventional cardiologist that I’d like to share with you. Our hour-long discussion delved into my functional health report, and I believe the insights I gained could apply to many of you, shedding light on the world of functional medicine in a way even conventional medical providers can understand.
Understanding My Cardiometabolic Health
It is important for you to understand my cardiometabolic health as well as the different areas I am working on in my own health journey.
I Have High ApoB & LP(a) Levels
As I’ve mentioned before, my ApoB and LP(a) levels are high. ApoB represents harmful cholesterol particles, and LP(a) is responsible for making LDL cholesterol even more damaging. My cardiologist recommended lowering ApoB as much as possible, as LP(a) cannot be altered. Diet and lifestyle changes alone weren’t sufficient for me, so I started medication.
My Body Is Also Insulin Resistant
Insulin Resistance is when your body doesn’t respond well to insulin and is not as effective at taking in glucose from your blood. This is common for a lot of people who are at risk for Type 2 diabetes, while Type 1 diabetics are unable to produce insulin which can be caused by a few different reasons.
Next on the agenda was my insulin resistance, which was slightly elevated when last checked in February. My cardiologist stressed the importance of maintaining good metabolic health, as elevated insulin levels and, eventually higher-than-optimal blood sugar can be as detrimental as high cholesterol. To address this, I’ve been committed to regular workouts since April and plan to retest soon.
Elevated blood sugar isn’t just a concern for your blood vessels; it affects nearly every aspect of your health through a process called glycation. (I’ll include a link below for more information.)
We also examined my red blood cell numbers, B vitamins, and homocysteine levels, which were slightly off. These anomalies suggested an issue with either vitamin B absorption or utilization—a condition that can lead to cardiovascular disease and even cancer over time. To address this, I started taking a liposomal B complex with methylated Bs and will recheck my levels soon.
Inflammation In My System
Lastly, we explored the root cause of inflammation in my system. My ferritin levels had been consistently high for years. While I’ve been proactive in improving my gut health and detoxifying my body, I’m now investigating the presence of mycotoxins. I recently sent a blood sample for testing to uncover any potential connections.
My 10 Year Health Journey
My journey to better health has taken over a decade, but the good news is that this process can now be expedited for you, within a year or so. The approach involves comprehensive lab tests, a thorough health history assessment, a physical examination, and the identification of health issues or potential risks. From there, a customized plan is developed, which may include dietary and lifestyle changes, medications, and supplements. Regular follow-ups allow us to measure the success of the plan and make adjustments as needed.
This approach isn’t just about treating specific issues; it’s about optimizing overall health. Whether you’ve battled chronic illness for years or simply want to maintain your well-being for as long as possible, the key is to optimize your diet and lifestyle while using supplements and medications if necessary.
In the end, what fixes one thing can often fix many things and reduce the risk of developing new health issues—a true testament to holistic health care.
