Off-Label Hyperbaric Chamber Use For Tissue Damaged By Radiation
Off-Label Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) for Tissue Damaged By Radiation
Radiation therapy, which is frequently used to treat cancer, occasionally damages healthy tissues in the vicinity of the treatment site. Recent testing is looking at the potential benefits of a hyperbaric chamber for tissue damaged by radiation.

“We’re proud to be able to bring this to Schuylkill County and be one of the only practices locally to offer this type of therapy outside of the hospital based chambers.”
Using HBOT For Minimizing Tissue Damage Is An “Off-Label” Use
Although it is not formally licensed for this purpose, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is being investigated as an off-label therapeutic option for minimizing radiation-induced tissue damage. This means the FDA hasn’t approved the HBOT for this specific use. This isn’t wholly experimental; the hyperbaric chamber has been approved for other medical treatments.
How Can Hyperbaric Chambers Help Tissue Damaged By Radiation?
Increased blood oxygen levels can aid in the repair of radiation-damaged tissues, which is how HBOT works. Hypoxia, or low oxygen levels, may occur during radiation therapy by reducing blood flow to the afflicted region, resulting in tissue damage. HBOT may help counteract these effects by increasing oxygenation to the damaged tissue area. Oxygenation can help produce collagen and angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels). These are vital for effective tissue repair.

Consider Trying An HBOT For Your Tissue Damage
HBOT may be helpful as an additional treatment for radiation therapy patients who are having side effects, including soft tissue necrosis or delayed wound healing. Contact us for a consultation and looking into if HBOT sessions are right for you.
