Lyme Disease and Coinfections

Treating Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that happens after being bitten by a tick, deer ticks to be specific. Usually, the tick must be attached for over 24 hours in order to transmit the infection. Lyme disease causes the famous “bullseye” rash as well as fever, headache, and fatigue to name a few of the symptoms.

Lyme disease is underdiagnosed in many settings. Many patients are told that their “labs are normal,” and yet they still deal with persistent symptoms. Standard tests for Lyme disease often miss these chronic infections and rarely ever look for coinfections that may occur alongside it.

What Ticks Actually Carry

Beyond just the Bartonella bacteria that causes Lyme disease, ticks also carry other kinds of bacteria, parasites, and viruses that can infect a human. Coinfections from these other causes can change the way someone experiences symptoms and affect the immune and detox pathways in unique ways.

Some other tickborne diseases that can occur alongside Lyme disease include:

  • Babesia: affects mitochondrial health, circulation, and oxygenation
  • Mycoplasma: makes cell walls deficient and involves the immune and respiratory systems
  • Ehrlichia: suppresses the immune system and causes systemic inflammation

PEAK Integrative Medicine has your health in our best interest. We want to help you detect everything that’s off in your body so we can treat the full spectrum of what’s going on.

Common Body Systems Affected by Lyme Disease

Lyme disease can affect the nervous system, joints, and multiple organ systems, which is why symptoms may appear in different ways for different people. Body systems that may experience imbalance or dysregulation from Lyme’s include:

  • nervous system – brain fog, mood changes, nerve pain
  • immune system – frequent infections, inflammation
  • musculoskeletal system – joint pain, muscle aches
  • cardiovascular system – palpitations, circulation issues
  • digestive & detox pathways – bloating, fatigue, toxin buildup
  • hormonal balance – sleep disturbances, energy swings

Not every system is affected in every person with Lyme’s. Symptoms of Lyme disease between two people with the same affected body system can also be different. Understanding which systems are affected helps us tailor a treatment plan that supports your entire body.

Comprehensive Diagnostics

We use advanced lab testing not only to test for Lyme disease but also for any other infections or markers that show something off in your body. We’ll look for markers of inflammation and even at the health of your gut and hormones if further investigation is needed.

Barrier Identification

As we evaluate your case, we’ll keep an eye out for immune dysregulation, stagnant detox pathways, nervous system involvement, or hidden chronic infections and viruses. All of this ensures your whole body is being taken into consideration.

Integrative Treatment

After we get a good handle on what’s going on, we’ll create an individualized treatment plan to treat you and your Lyme disease. Treatments may include detox and lymphatic support, immune system regulation, mitochondrial repair, lifestyle therapies, and targeted supplements and nutrition.

The Struggle to Get a Lyme Disease Diagnosis

Many patients may never see a bullseye rash when they contract Lyme disease. This can make recognizing your Lyme disease symptoms for what they are difficult. Lyme disease has the potential to cause neurological, joint, and systemic systems, which all could be confused with other diseases, especially if you have overlapping diagnoses.

It’s not uncommon for a Lyme disease diagnosis to be delayed or feel confusing at first, though frustrating. Some patients may even be told everything looks normal and even, but their body still just feels “off.” When symptoms persist despite standard evaluation, PEAK uses advanced clinical assessment to identify underlying patterns and develop a strategic, individualized plan.

At PEAK, we frequently evaluate patients with complex, multisystem illness where infections, immune function, environmental exposures, and metabolic health intersect. Our role is not simply to run tests. It is to interpret patterns and develop a strategic clinical plan tailored to the individual.

Why Regular Testing Can Miss Lyme Disease

Standard testing can possibly lead to a missed diagnosis of Lyme disease. This testing may be inaccurate in some cases because:

  • antibody testing cannot always distinguish between past exposure and
  • active infection, which can complicate interpretation in some cases
  • the immune system might be suppressed, which might hide infection from labs
  • Borrelia can evade immune detection through mechanisms such as tissue sequestration and immune modulation, making detection more challenging in some patients
  • timing can potentially change results, as antibodies may appear later or decline over time

All of these things can result in lab tests that seem normal or are inconclusive, delaying Lyme disease diagnoses in some people. PEAK integrates clinical history, symptom patterns, and advanced testing when appropriate to build a comprehensive understanding of each patient’s health.

Realistic Expectations for Healing

One of PEAK’s goals in treating patients and helping you with your chronic symptoms is to let you know that we are here to support you, no matter what your unique healing journey looks like. We work alongside you to help you understand your body, recognize improvements, and take an active role in your healing.

Recovery is often multi-phase and individualized, requiring a structured and carefully guided clinical approach, and not everyone will heal from Lyme disease in the exact same way or on the same timeline. It’s normal to experience ups-and-downs in the Lyme disease healing journey.

PEAK will be there to support you every step of the way. Even if progress isn’t linear, each step brings your body closer to balance and long-term healing. PEAK believes that support and follow up as you heal from Lyme’s matter just as much as the treatment itself.
