“The leading causes of disability are musculoskeletal injuries, meaning disorders of muscles, joints, nerves, bones. The most common approach typically takes a segmented approach of only medications to treat the issue. Although symptoms can be suppressed with medications, that’s only one component to the disorder complex that’s being addressed. By also addressing the movement and healing component, we can successfully treat these injuries. At PEAK we address ALL of the aspects for resolution instead of just ‘dealing with’ constant pain cycles.”
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica describes discomfort that travels down the sciatic nerve, which emerges from the lower back and travels through the hips and down each leg. A herniated disc or bone spur crushing a portion of the nerve are the most common causes of chronic sciatic nerve pain.
Symptoms Of Sciatic Nerve Pain
You will feel pain in your lower back, buttocks, and leg discomfort, numbness, or tingling. Sometimes, the pain can be severe; other times it can be a dull, constant throb.
How To Diagnose Sciatic Nerve Pain
In order to diagnose nerve compression, a patient’s medical history must be reviewed, a physical examination must be performed, and imaging tests such as CT or MRI scans must be performed.
How To Treat Sciatica
The goal of treatment is to release the pressure on the sciatic nerve. Commonly used methods include physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments, and activities meant to strengthen the muscles that support the spine. Anti-inflammatory drugs are sometimes administered to treat nerve irritation.
How PEAK Integrative Medicine Treats Sciatic Nerve Pain
To determine if a disc or muscle problem is the source of the nerve pinch, we do a comprehensive examination. We will use flexion distraction therapy to decompress the spine and the Graston Technique to break up scar tissue as part of our treatment approach. Our treatment also includes nerve flossing procedures and core stability exercises.
Treating Sciatica Long Term
Regular check-ups are necessary for long-term care in order to monitor and control spine health. In order to avoid flare-ups in the future, we advise patients on preventative measures and good lifestyle choices.
