Diabetic Health
Having diabetes impacts the lifestyle you want to live and has major longterm health concerns if it is not managed proactively. Often, your family doctor or the hospital that diagnosed you with Type 2 Diabetes is not equipped with the resources to help you as a Type 2 Diabetic.
At PEAK Integrative Medicine, we want to provide you with all of the resources and help you need to live a healthy lifestyle and full life. We treat people, not disease, and we know as a Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic in Pennsylvania, it can be difficult. It can feel like one doctor prescribed prescriptions for your Type 2 diabetes, and the next says you should have insulin. While either may be necessary, we seek to find the solution with functional and lifestyle medicine where you can improve your health by changing your diet, exercising, and managing your health.

Integrative Medicine For Diabetes
Integrative medicine looks at a more holistic and preventative approach to Type 2 Diabetes. Through diet, exercise, and close monitoring of your sugar levels, we can navigate the challenges of diabetes. With an integrative medicine approach to diabetes, we develop a custom plan for your health. The end goal is to reverse diabetes naturally by removing barriers from insulin being able to work effectively for your body.
How To Treat Type 2 Diabetes Naturally
Lifestyle medicine for diabetes involves changes to one’s lifestyle and health choices that are personalized to them. Not every diabetic is overweight. Not every food responds the same for different people. Some foods might make your sugars spike while it helps others. We take a personalized approach to managing your diabetes.
1. Minimizing High Blood Sugar Through Diet
One key way to manage your blood sugar is by managing your diet. Your blood sugar is impacted by the food you eat, so it is natural that your diet would impact your blood sugar since your body does not produce enough insulin to manage the sugars in your bloodstream.
It is important to note, if you are at the beginning of your diabetic journey, that it is not simply sugar that causes spikes in your blood sugar, but carbs. The carbs in your food are the common cause of your blood sugar increasing.
Many of the more common foods we we eat have carbs in it, so it would be impossible and not advisable to cut carbs and sugars completely out of your diet. A healthy diet that will keep your blood sugars stable will have balance and be personalized to your health needs. At PEAK, we will work with you to develop a healthy diet that manages your sugar levels.

2. Manage Your Blood Sugar Through Excercise
Exercise is a key solution to improving your health while managing your blood sugars, but it is not easy. Exercise can be challenging for diabetics because it results in major blood sugar fluctuations. When exercising, you burn carbs. In order for these carbs to be converted to energy, insulin is used.
The changes within your bloodstream can be hard to manage, but with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), we can see how your sugar levels react to foods and exercise. From this data and information, we can advise you on your diet and exercise.
