Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the many chronic conditions we treat at PEAK Integrative Medicine. We have heard from many people suffering from IBS that they have tried finding a solution for years, and nothing seems to work. Another doctor’s visit is another dead end. Another prescription that does not work. Another magic diet that yields no results.
Each time you go to the doctor for your IBS, you are prescribed another drug from the pharmacy that has little to no effect or just ends up being a bandaid. Or you are told it is due to your diet, but no further guidance is given. At PEAK, we seek to determine the root cause of your IBS symptoms to help you live a healthy and functional lifestyle.

Our Approach To IBS
Our functional medicine approach looks at proactive health rather than reactive. Functional medicine has several options for testing and treatment not available in most insurance-based medical practices, and we often see results even for those that have seen gastrointestinal specialists without any help from them. We want to reinvent primary care for you so you no longer have to suffer from the symptoms of IBS.
How We Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
The cause of IBS varies from person to person and the specific scenario. IBS can be connected to your diet and specific intolerances or deficiencies. Or, you may have something often called “leaky gut syndrome” which means the gut lining and the protective mucosal layer is damaged. Irritable bowel syndrome can also be linked a parasite, yeast, worms, or bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
Then, there are people that have had problems for such a long time that it’s a little of all of the above.
With so many potential root causes, we have to take a personalized approach to determine the root cause of IBS for you. At PEAK, we will take the time to investigate your diet and overall health factors that can be causing IBS. Based on this information, we will make a health plan where we coach you on your eating habits, as well as perform tests on your stool samples. We prioritize your long-term and your future health when we provide an effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome.
Steps To Treating IBS
Below are key steps to treating IBS:
Step 1: Determine The Cause
At PEAK, we will work with you, your diet, and your IBS symptoms to find out the root cause of your IBS. This may require testing such as a comprehensive digestive stool analysis (CDSA) or microbiome test, as well as investigating your diet. Through diet changes, we will check in regularly to see how your IBS symptoms progress.
Step 2: Remove The Cause Of IBS
Once we determine the root cause of your IBS, we will have a clear roadmap for your health to remove the cause entirely. Keeping the cause of IBS out of your gut will lead to a healthier life without the pain of irritable bowel syndrome.
Step 3: Ongoing Health & Diet Management To Prevent IBS
Many people have struggled with IBS for their entire lives. We want your symptoms to stop and remain in the past. Ongoing diet management and health coaching can make IBS remain in the past. With functional and lifestyle medicine, you can live a healthy lifestyle where you will feel better.

How To Prevent Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Preventative health is what makes PEAK different from doctor offices and medical practices. By determining early signs of irritable bowel syndrome and its causes, we can prevent IBS from continuing. How can you prevent IBS? By keeping away from the food that causes IBS, or if you have a parasite causing IBS, eat food or take a medication that will remove the parasite from your system.
Preventing IBS starts with determining what causes your symptoms of IBS. Typically symptoms of IBS are caused by your diet. A managed diet for IBS could have you avoiding certain foods with a large amount of gluten/yeast. Other IBS diets may require you to avoid specific foods due to food intolerances, such as dairy or acidic foods.
